Bass Rock sunset with heavy cloud

Bass Rock sunset with heavy cloud
Oil on canvas
20x16 inches

Another Bass Rock painting, this time working up from my pastel ideas into oil. This was painted entirely with a pallette knife (except a couple of moments of finger painting- still the artists best tool for softening edges!)

I love the textured affect that can be acheived with the knife, it prevents you from being too detailed. Also I love paintings that from a distance are based on realism but as you go closer the image breaks up and can be quite abstract.

Hi Ryan,
I love the colores you used in this particular painting of Bass Rock. The grey/blues against that blazing orange is great. I like to see how you have portrayed the rock in various lighting/colors in the different pieces.
I've been very tempted to do various paintings of the same subject just to see the changes I would come up with and will one day do just that. I think that's a great way to see your improvement in painting. Nice work here Ryan.

Cheers Ron

That's what I love about this subject, the change in colours can be immense and I love the solitude of the Rock itself.
