Sail Boat at Cockenzie

Sail Boat at Cockenzie
Oil on Canvas
15x15 inches

Another scene from the East Lothian coast. This boat was sailing in the Firth of Forth with the Cockenzie power station in the background. Although power stations aren't traditionally beautiful buildings, this dominates the coastal views from Leith to North Berwick and depending on the quality of light has its own unique beauty with its strong vertical chimneys- its a subject whose beauty is an artists job to convey!!
This was painted from a pen and ink sketch. I exclusively used the pallette knife and paint texture to emphasise the abstract attraction of the scene.

A beautiful painting. (I got here via WetCanvas.) Your work is lovely. I like how it is loose, yet realistic.

Ryan up in Morro Bay we have a power plant along the shore just like this but with 3 smoke stacks! Not the best for making quaint coastal paintings so most people work around them...but considering their size it's pretty darned hard to do that. One day I'll paint tnem too. Good work on this painting Ryan.

Hi Ron

I say paint the 3 chimneys! I can see these ones from my window and they dominate the coast. I kinda like them in a odd way as without them you wouldn't get the same sense of place- I think anyone from this area instantly knows. We get a nice hazy light some days and I like how the colours recede and lose saturation. You get all kinds of nice violets, blues, even dirty oranges. Also as a subject they add a bit of grit to an otherwise picturesque coast- I'm getting into that by watching Bill Wray's blog (really inspiring).

I'm planning on doing more this in near future
Cheers again for commenting
